Issue Details

Issue:

Why do video messages pause and say that they are "Buffering" during playback?

Solution:
There are many factors that impact the duration or repeated Buffering of messages during playback.   Factors fall into three main categories:

  • Temporary Internet Congestion: Buffering can occur for longer than normal, or repeatedly during playback for simple reasons such as a slow internet connection (ex. dialup), or congested internet traffic between your computer and the video’s source on the video message servers. In these cases, simply waiting for the Buffering step to complete and for the video to start, may resolve the problem. In the case of congested traffic, the only solution may be to wait and/or try to watch the video later after the congestion clears up.

  • Viewing Messages Encoded for Higher Bandwidth than is Available: Specific Buffering issues are most often caused by viewing a video message that is encoded for a connection speed that is faster than the viewer's current internet connection speed. The browser has difficulty connecting at the desired speed due to the Internet connection and Buffering delays are encountered. Whether the delay is problematic can be one of personal preference.

  • Needing to Adjust Connection Speed Settings in Windows Media Player: If the video message is viewed at a high connection speed and buffers often at the Dialup speed, it may be that the video in its trip to the viewing computer, is having a problem keeping up the speed needed to play correctly (ie. internet congestion). However, may be helpful to adjust the connection speed setting in Windows Media Player that the application uses to help determine how much buffer to collect. See the Related Issues links for more information on how to make this setting change.
